Otone Brass Band

● Session 06  ·  Filmed at The Music Room, Erie, Colorado

The artist

Otone Brass Band have been playing New Orleans-style brass out of Denver for more than twenty years, five albums, hundreds of shows, and a second-line feel that does not much care what room it is in. They write their own material rather than living off the standards.

They have played Red Rocks, Five Points Jazz, City Park Jazz and the Democratic National Convention, shared stages with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Galactic, Ozomatli and the Flobots, and turned up on NPR's Radiolab. They are also fully mobile, parades, second lines, street format, which is a different discipline from playing a stage, and it shows in how little the room seems to matter to them.

In the room

The whole horn line across the warehouse floor, boxed amplifiers stacked to the ceiling behind them
Baritone and tenor, reading the chart off a tablet
Trombone, eyes shut
Sousaphone, the bottom of the whole band
The kit that holds a second line together, the racks turned pink
Trumpet in a flat cap, bell up
Both trumpets under the blue wash
The same seven, the room turned red
